CONSUMPTION CORRUPTION

Consuming, consuming, consuming, always consuming. TV, social media, radio- reading, eating, wearing, all consuming things.

How many of us have heard the phrase, “You are what you eat”? Probably all of us. But, how many of us have stopped and really pondered what that means- on a biological level? Have you considered that what we eat in turn makes up what we are, physically speaking? If we stopped eating, we would wither away and eventually die. By eating, we are literally replacing bit for bit (or pound for pound) the actual mass that makes up our bodies.

Parallelly, let's think about when an animal dies in nature. Eventually, it’s body breaks down, returns to the ground and becomes sustenance for other animals. What once was pounds of flesh and blood and bones that takes up physical space in this world, somehow dissipates and the mass of the animal is displaced.

So then, do we consider what we are eating? The modern Western diet is incredibly far off from what our God given bodies were designed for. The highly processed, chemically preserved, astronomically high sugar content “food” is what we become. Is your body being made up of organic fruits and veggies, grass-fed or wild caught meat and healthy carbs and fats? Or is it being made out of that Velveeta Hamburger Helper that offers about as much nutritional value as the cardboard box and plastic wrapper it comes in? Our bodies brake down our food on a cellular level. It is a delicate dance that requires specific ratios of vitamins, minerals and healthy fats in order to perform at optimum levels. When we don’t feed our bodies with nutrient dense, properly prepared whole foods, and instead consume foods covered in pesticides and mixed with chemical agents, we see many conditions occur. Things like debilitating fatigue, hormonal issues, skin rashes, hives, eczema, hidden inflammation, depression, anxiety, sugar handling issues, diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. The list goes on.

Another way to look at this is we are what we consume. If what we eat becomes what we are at a biological level bit for bit, then does it not stand to reason that anything we consume otherwise becomes us as well? Does that not include what we watch, listen to, read and invest our time in? Do those things not then make up our thoughts, feelings, emotions and memories- our minds? These things- they give way to how we interact in this world, in the physical space that our bodies take up. They influence our decisions, try to define who and what we are and affect our buying choices. If not, would companies spend millions on advertising every year?

So then, is your consumption of the everyday corrupted? Are you being consumed with worldly standards, views and opinions? Ultimately, they are being hurdled at us by the second.

If we truly wish to experience the peace we so desperately desire, we must start by making a conscious, deliberate choice to consume Him. Consume Him in what we read, what we listen to, what we allow ourselves to see and be subjected to. The world and all its clamor doesn't have to leave our ears ringing in our pillows at night. Living peacefully in His presence on this Earth is attainable through Him, and He longs to be there with you. It comes when we surrender and begin to be consumed by Him.

Proverbs 4:20-22, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
